Personal Horror at its Best
In this second offering by Scott Cram, ‘Where They Take You’ shows us an author who’s only improving with each tale. This story of deeply personal horror builds from a mundane start, with shades of Stephen King showing through in the descriptions of a sleepy Maine town and its residents. Add a dash of Lovecraftian insanity, a narrator that keeps you guessing with regards to their reliability, as well as a slowly encroaching menace, and you’ve got the recipe for a book that’s tough to put down.
I found myself saying, “Just one more chapter…” more than once during this quick read, and once it got its hooks in, I was in it ’til the end.
If you enjoy quiet horror, which grows out of the details of an everyday life in which not all is as it seems, you’ll enjoy the skin-crawling build-up of ‘Where They Take You’.
