The following is a short excerpt from Scott Cram’s horror novel, The Well of Trees:

The Hyena stared into the eyes of the first man that he had ever killed.

The thing smiled and nodded at him, recognition mixing with malevolence on its pale, desiccated skull. Bati started backing up, a helpless giggle escaping his lips. This seemed to enrage the twisted form and it jumped on him, white teeth gnashing wetly in the gloomy night.

Bati struggled with the thing, amazed at the inhuman strength in those skinny, bony arms. A shriek escaped him as he turned to his side and sent the cackling monstrosity flying into a row of looming on-lookers. The moans of the endless crowd were growing, eclipsing even the sound of the damnable rain.

Lightning flashed again, and he saw a row of faces – men, women and children from a tribe he had decimated, personally, in southern Sudan. He turned and ran, only to come face to face with the rotting face of his wife, her seraph hanging loosely around her ravaged neck. She reached out and slashed at him with her claw-like hands, drawing more blood and sending a rake of seething pain into his brain.

He lashed out, knocking her down, and began running through the angry, muddy crowd. He saw enemies all around him, hungry for him – reaching for his flesh and tearing at his sodden clothes. The Hyena was crying now, shaking his head in disbelief, using his shoulder to barrel through the endless throng.

He tried to close his eyes when lightning flashed again, illuminating the faces of the voracious dead. When he opened his swollen, reddened eyes, the Hyena was looking into the soulless white face of his favorite son, Regatu.

“No.” he whispered, trying to back away in the churning, moving mud.

“Yesssss.” The thing hissed, its lipless smile revealing black, broken teeth. It moved toward him, eyes glowing. Other figures gathered around, encircling him.

A helpless giggle escaped The Hyena’s lips as the mindless, hungry dead fell upon him, ripping out his tongue and throat, silencing his laughter forever.
